Milton Margai lecturer charged with murder

A lecturer at the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology was last Friday (24 July) arraigned in court for the alleged murder of his spouse, Marie Samura.

Gibril Fofanah appeared at the Freetown Magistrates’ Court No.1 presided over by Magistrate Mohamed Seray-Wurie and charged with one count of murder contrary to law.

According to police prosecutor Sergeant 922 John Dumbuya, the accused murdered the deceased on 14 June, 2015 at Gbendebu village in Goderich, west of Freetown.

Testifying, Detective Inspector Amadu Vandi Kanneh told the court that he recognized the accused and recalled on 14June, 2015 that he obtained additional statement from the accused person. He said he and Detective Sergeant 7799 Koroma also obtained voluntary statement from the accused and in the process he was cautioned and interrogated in Krio, adding that the statement was read to the accused before the latter attested it to be true.

Inspector Kanneh stated that on 15 July an additional statement was obtained from the accused, during which he denied the allegation of murdering his spouse. He said the accused told detectives that the deceased was sick and admitted at the 34 Military Hospital, where she passed away.

The accused is represented by three defence attorneys, C.F. Edwards, A.Y. Brewah and M.P. Sesay.

The mater was adjourned to 30 July for further hearing.
