Trio get 5 years sentence

July 27, 2015 By Hassan Gbassay Koroma

Justice Alusine Sesay of the Freetown High Court last Friday (24 July) slammed a 20 years sentence on three individuals after they were convicted for unlawful possession of arms and ammunitions.

Mohamed Sesay, Aruna Sesay and Ibrahim Sesay were convicted on four counts of conspiracy and unlawful possession of arms and ammunitions.

While delivering his ruling, Justice Sesay said he had taken cognizance of the plea in mitigation by defence counsel C.F. Edwards, as well as the time the convicts had spent in remand.

But he reckoned that he has more concern about the serious nature of the offence for which the men have been found guilty before the court.

Thus, he ordered that the convicts serve five years each in prison for all the charges of conspiracy and unlawful possession of arms and ammunitions, adding that the sentence would run concurrently, minus time they had spent in prison.

The prosecution successfully proved that in June 2011 the trio conspired with some unknown persons to commit a felony, and that they were found in possession of arms and ammunitions, to wit an AK 47 assault rifle with live ammunitions, being property of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
