Young Stars male and female volleyball club started their Western Area Inter Club Volleyball Championship title defense with victory over Super Six and Solar Spikers respectively.

It was the women’s match that got the competition underway, with a

Comfortable 3-1 [22-25, 26-24, 25-20 and 25-20] win for the Young Stars female team, who proved that they are still the queens of the court.

Despite having the last laugh, the Stars were shocked by a Solar Spikers team which started the match in a strong and aggressive approach giving them a 25-22 win.

The first set win for Spikers was a wake-up call for the defending champions, who should thank debutant middle blocker, Binta Bah. The tall and lanky player proved too strong for the opposing team with her blocks and strong hit from the centre.

The impressive display by Bah helped the team secure a 26-24, 25-20 and 25-20 win in the final three sets of the match.

Unlike their female team, the Young Stars male squad was quick to finish-off opponent Super Six in a three straight set win which ended 25-16, 25-23 and 25-16.

The earlier combative approach to the match quickly dissipated due to Young Stars’ dominance, with a combination of strong blocks, floor defense and strong spikes from Patrick Lombi, Abubakarr I Kamara and John Sesay.

Despite the defeat, Super Six had something from the match which they need to be glad about – the display of the national U-23 captain Sahid Tarawalie and rising star Mohamed Sesay.

This year’s championship is being played on a round robin basis, with the six clubs Young Stars, Super Six, Solar Spikers, Forsieans, Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Force and SVC ,all battling for the crown.
