The planned Western Area Football Association (WAFA) December 11-12 congress is rumoured to have been postponed following an advice from several higher authorities.
An official statement is expected to be released today by the authorities concerned over the decision, but according to close source within the Sports Ministry the decision came from top political echelon.
“We were advised not to stage any elections for now because it will go against the President’s earlier order that all stakeholders must reverse to the status quo,” the source said.
The reported postponement of the WAFA congress could be traced to an earlier post on a WhatsApp group where Deputy Sports Minister Ishmael Al Sankoh Conteh asked: “Is there any need for a WAFA election under the current circumstance, when President Koroma had asked to return to the same status quo after the cancelation of the Eastern Region FA election?”
The deputy minister further asked: “If elections of WAFA go ahead as scheduled will it not result to the same denial of the instructions of President Koroma?”
The postponement will give the Abdul Kaninseu led WAFA administration an extended term in office. The former president of Ports Authority FC was elected as WAFA boss in December 2011 to replace veteran administrator Alhaji Unisa Alim ‘Awoko’ Sesay.
