The Salone People 1 online WhatsApp forum last Friday (16 October) donated 100 bags of rice to flood victims at the National Stadium in Freetown.

The donation was made after one Kabba Fofanah, a Sierra Leonean based in United States of America, mobilised his colleagues to provide support for victims of the 16 September flood disaster.

“We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, which was the reason why Sierra Leoneans living in America, mostly Atlanta and Georgia, contributed money to support flood victims,” Fofanah said, adding that after the unexpected torrential rains that devastated poor communities within Freetown and its environs, a lot of families lost food and livelihood.

He said they collaborated with the Kono Development Foundation, a registered organisation both in the USA and Sierra Leone, to execute the initiative, and that the group raised US$2,270 through small donations from its members and purchased 115 bags (50kg) of rice, which was donated to flood victims at the National Stadium as part of the pilot phase of their project.

The presentation was done on behalf of the diaspora group by Bockarie Enssah, honorary Senator, Georgia State Senate and a representative of the Kono Development Foundation in Sierra Leone.

Responding, Ms. Kadia Buya Kamara of the Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs thanked the group for their support to the people of Sierra Leone and urged others to emulate their good work.
