September  28, 2015 By Sahr Morris Jr.

The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA), in collaboration with One Management , has postponed the first edition of ‘Run 4 A Reason’ marathon which was slated for Sunday, 27 September to Sunday, 4 October, 2015, according to SLAA Public Relation Officer, Baraka Sparkay.

Sparkay said the decision to postpone the event was as a result of the unfortunate flood disaster in Freetown on 16 September and the fact that the finishing line of marathon – national stadium – is now used as shelter to accommodate thousands of flood victims.

The SLAA PRO said notwithstanding the change of date, all other arraignment remains the same, adding that they are going to use the standard route in line with the international body, IAAF rules.

He also confirmed that the marathon route remains the same, with the starting point being Lumley beach (Family Kingdom) round about, going through Wilkinson Road, Congo Cross, Brookfields, Savage Street, Campbell Street, Pademba Road, Cotton Tree, Siaka Stevens Street, PZ, Regent Road, Goderich Street, Eastern Police, Kissy Road, Cline Town, Fourah Bay Road, Eastern Police, Abacha Street, PZ, Wilberforce Street, Siaka Stevens Street, Sander Street, Savage Street, Syke Street, and the national stadium.

SLAA Technical Director Harold Palmer said they decided to name the marathon “Run for a Reason Marathon” because it is important they tell the world that the Ebola outbreak is coming to an end in Sierra Leone.

Palmer said they came into agreement with the UK based group to organise the marathon for the world to know that Sierra Leoneans are very healthy despite being faced with a big setback internationally.

He disclosed that provincial athletes will take part in the marathon, which will be open to all athletes aged 18 and above, adding that forms are free.

Despite a change of date, the organisers say they still expect over 2000 athletes, including professional and amateur runners to participate in the run.
