St. Peter’s West Africa Methodist (WAM) Church will on Sunday, February 24, 2019, celebrate its 120 years chapel anniversary, together with the unveiling and dedicating of a Viscount Prestige II Organ at the church, Main Road, Congo Town.
Before the highly anticipated not to be forgotten Sunday’s divine service, the church will on Friday February 22 host its Anniversary revival at 6: 00 P.M,which is expected to prepare the minds of its worshippers for Sunday’s service.
The historic church was founded by freed slaves from the Congo, who were mostly fishermen. They earlier named the church as the “Zimba Church” and was built as a small stone church in 1899.
St. Peter’s W.A.M. Church is one of the indigenous churches that has been serving the Congo Town community (Congotonians) and its membership is average in number but very dynamic.
Spiritually, the church has made headway in propagating the good news of Christ and members appreciate God’s redemptive imitative by sacrificing His only begotten son, Jesus Christ for their salvation.
“Spiritual upliftment is in its increase. The area of worship is satisfactory. Members and visitors do appreciate our way of worship. This encompass some aspect of ecumenism i.e. of course our orthodox form of worship and a flavour of Pentecostalism. This has helped the church to grow gradually in its spiritual aspect,” Said Victor E.W. Samuels, Choirmaster and Organist.
He said the church is offering mid-week early communion service every Wednesday at 7.15am, adding that the service has helped to boost the spiritual upliftment of its members and friends and has been a blessing to those who have been attending.
Brother Samuels further revealed that on its 120 years of continued worship and fellowship, the church has administratively been handled properly with its little human resources.
He said: “Officers have been supportive. We have the following groups in the church: Choir, Sunday School, Youth Fellowship, Men’s Fellowship, Sisterhood, Stewards Union, Women’s Connexional Auxiliary and the Poor Stewards Union. These entire groups have been supportive to the church in its growth.”
Brother Samuels, whilst urging Christians and all Sierra Leoneans to join them in celebrating 120 years of God’s work, said the church is open to receive new members, associate members and friends who are willing to lift the banner of Christ high.
“Our hands are willing to receive as many as would like to become members, associate members and friends,” he said.
