Magistrate Santigie Bangura, presiding at the Siaka Stevens Street Magistrates’ Courts’ No.1, yesterday (Wednesday 21st February) sentenced 54 hoodlums to three months imprisonment or an alternative fine of Le1 million each.

Police arrested 56 persons on January 26 whom they accused of fomenting riot on the nomination day of the ruling All Peoples Congress presidential, parliamentary and local council candidates.

In the ensuing melee on Campbell Street in central Freetown, one person was killed, while scores sustained injuries, including a police officer.

The police subsequently charged 54 persons with riotous conduct, one with wounding with intent, while another was transferred to the juvenile court.

Those charged with riotous conduct pleaded guilty to the charge, while first accused Amara Kamara, who was charged with wounding, did not take a plea as his matter is still underway.

The men were represented by Lawyers I.P. Mammie, A.K. Koroma, J.M. Jengo and A. Kamanda.
