A sierra Leonean living in Sweden, Esther Cole, yesterday provided business starts-up assistance to some victims of the August 14, 2017, mudslide and flooding disaster, which claimed the lives of over one thousand people.
The disaster, which is the worst to hit the country after decades, left thousands of Sierra Leoneans homeless with a few currently living in makeshift structures at Old Skul and Juba barracks respectively.
Speaking during the presentation, a relative of madam Cole, Ngardie Josephine Kargbo, stated that she was happy to join her aunt to associate themselves with victims of the disaster.
“This is a little support from my aunt in Sweden to help you find something to do and move on with your life. This is not the end of the road for you. I urge you to try and put the past behind you and move on with your life. It is the work of God. Don’t allow this problem to rule over your life,” she said.
While, encouraging the beneficiaries to make good use of the money received by engaging in businesses that would help to change their lives for the better, Ms. Kargbo urged other well-meaning Sierra Leoneans and organizations to continue providing for the victims.
“We will be monitoring the progress of your individual business,” she added.
The beneficiaries were full of praised for Esther Cole and assured that the money given to them will be used for the intended purposes to change their lives.
They expressed concern that they have not been having the required support from the government and other agencies.
Murtala Mohamed Kamara of Salone Jamborie also offered words of hope to the victims and urged them to be strong eve in the midst of their problem.
The beneficiaries include; Daniel Kamara, Benia Daboh, Hawa Bangura, Rugiatu Mamadie and Sento Timbo. They received a million leones each.
Social workers Sierra Leone have been providing the much needed psychosocial counseling for victims residing in the camp.
