The long awaited Western Area Football Association (WAFA) female league is finally set to kick off with Mahmoud FC, taking on Buck FC in the league opener on Friday October 6, 2017, at the Siaka Steven Stadium practising field in Freetown.
Both sides are already tagged as the tournament favourites, considering the crop of players in their fold and according to the WAFA secretariat, this year’s tournament will attract over 10 female teams in the region.
“We are all set for the tournament and will be played in a very competitive atmosphere. The plans, format and prizes at stake will be officially revealed in a press conference on Thursday October 21,” said Mohamed Jatu, WAFA secretariat staff.
Meanwhile, the likes of defending champions, Sierra Leone Police, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Force (RSLAF), Amazon FC, Sierra Leone Recreational Service (Prisons FC), Soccer Queens, Rural Queens, are amongst the participating teams for this year’s tournament.
The WAFA in June this year refused to play any football competition including their female league on the notion that the Sierra Leone Football Association should address several issues relating to the game and WAFA’s stance came after the SLFA Media Department released a statement that a sum of Thirty Million Leones approximately (US$3,987) was disbursed to all the four regional F.A’s for the running of the 2017 regional female football league.
Reacting immediately, the WAFA Secretary General Kashor Holland-Cole, stated in a WhatsApp social media forum; that his association will only play football if the F.A invites their chairman to all SLFA Executive meetings and activities and allow the judiciary bodies to start work amongst others.
