Captain of Sierra Leone home-based squad, Yeami Dunia is confident they can shock Nigeria in their play-off opener in the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) tournament on September 11 at the Nduom Sports Stadium.
Leone Stars have enjoyed weathered acclimatization since their arrival in Ghana last Thursday unlike their Nigeria opponent and Dunia believes they are in shape ahead of the game.
“We are going into the match as underdogs and we want to remain that until we achieve our aims which are to beat Nigeria and then make it into the group stage,” Dunia said.
“We want to qualify to the next stage of the competition and we will take it game after game. We have good players and I know we will go through.”
Monday’s showdown will be the first time the adaptable defender and his teammate will play against a Nigerian side but the skipper does welcome the challenge.
He said: “The technical team has done their work and continue to do so. I believe we are physical and mentally fit with the right attitude and we must show them by delivering positively on the pitch.”
A win against Nigeria will automatically place Sierra Leone in group A against possible winner between Mali vs Mauritania and Guinea vs Guinea Bissau. The tournament winner will take home a giant trophy plus a purse of $100,000.
