Minister of Sports, Ahmed Khanou has revealed that the next Sierra Leone premier league season will possibly kick-start in February 2017.
The Sports Minister’s revelation came just after his first meeting with executive members of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) and stakeholders as he started his move to resolving the long and unhealthy dispute within the football family.
He said: “Several issues were deliberated in the meeting and one of those was the commencement of the league and we are planning to see how we can get the league to kick-off on or before 17 February 2017.
“The clubs are willing to play but we hope to have extra-ordinary congress before the league commences. What was agreed on is that nothing should stop the league from playing and we are ready to work towards that,” the Sports Minister said.
In October, 2016, the SLFA Director of Competition, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, told journalist that the premier league season would begin in January ,2017 but the Chairman of Old Edwardians Football Club, Emmanuel Saffa Abdulia, admitted that his side would merge with other top flight clubs to boycott any attempt by the football body to revive the domestic league without holding congress.
Sierra Leone club last enjoyed Premier League football in 2014 and the league was even suspended due to the Ebola epidemic. East End Lions were topping the 2014 campaign prior to its suspension.
