Sierra Leone’s Minister of Sports, Ahmed Khanou, on Tuesday, 9 August bade farewell and delivered goodwill message to the country’s Olympic team in the ongoing Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Before his departure at the Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, the Sports Minister said he was very excited that Sierra Leone is taking part in the all-important global sporting event which gives the athletes lot of opportunities.
“As a government we did all we can in ensuring that the athletes were not left out. I believe they will make a great impact at this sporting event because the Olympic is not just about winning medals but a learning process and the ideals of the games.
“Another plus for us is that we have three home-grown athletes in this year’s games and their participation represents the hopes and aspirations of this country,” he said.
As he wished the team well, the former volleyball administrator urged the four athletes to believe in themselves and strive hard in order to achieve the ultimate in their various events.
While in Rio, Minister Khanou attended the 8th Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, which attracted over 30 delegates from 32 member countries. The meeting took place in the context of the recent adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as a marked increase in sport integrity issues.
Khanou and his counterparts discussed the contribution of sport to the new global development agenda, with an emphasis on promoting healthy lives and well-being for all. The meeting also considered the negative impact of sport integrity issues on sustainable development, and options for effective governmental responses.
