One Alusine Turay was yesterday sentenced to six month imprisonment or pay an alternative fine of Le1 million by Magistrate Komba Kamanda, after he was convicted for being found in possession of a bag of cannabis.
Magistrate Kamanda stated that since that accused had pleaded guilty to the offence, he was sentencing him to six month imprisonment or an alternative fine of Le1 million.
The accused was charged together with his wife, Musu Bangura, who was the second accused, but the court discharged her on compassionate ground as she will have to take of the children.
Magistrate Kamanda opined that the court should not punish both spouses, as he cautioned and discharged the wife.
Magistrate Kamanda admonished the wife to go and do something good for self and that if she is brought to his court again for the same offence or found with any quantity of cannabis she would be given a five year jail term.
The couple, Alusine Turay and Musu Bangura, was arraigned at the Freetown Magistrates’ Court No.1, on one count each for possession of cannabis sativa, contrary to section 48(1) of the Pharmacy Act 2001.
According to the particulars of offence, the accused were found in possession of a bag containing dried leaves, suspected to be the banned substance, at Hasting, few kilometers outside Freetown.
