Salone cricket team gets hero’s welcome

Hundreds of Sierra Leoneans and officials of the Ministry of Sports Wednesday gave the Sierra Leone national cricket team, ‘The Patriots’ a hero’s welcome as they arrived home after a historic triumph in the ICC-Africa T20 Division II tournament in South Africa.

Sierra Leone were crowned champions of the tournament after defeating Rwanda and Mozambique in the round-robin competition to qualify to the Division I tournament which includes Kenya, Namibia,  Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria,  Botswana, Ghana, Zambia.

The team was warmly received with a red carpet welcome immediately they disembarked from the Kenya Airways flight at the Lungi International Airport and were driven in a motorcade from Lungi via Port Loko to the National Stadium in Freetown.

“This was a missive welcome for us and the truth is that we were not expecting this. We appreciate the support from the ministry, the people of Sierra Leone and the media, for this, “said Francis Trevor Samura, Chief Executive Officer of Sierra Leone Cricket Association.
