A senior district education officer in eastern Sierra Leone has temporarily banned all schooling activities in her area of responsibility.

Deputy Director of Education Agnes Ngako Kamara has banned all schooling activities in Kono district until Police and other education authorities resolve an ongoing feud between two senior schools.

“No school activities will go on until we find out what caused the fight,” she says.

Islamic Secondary School of Koidu (ISSK) and Koidu Secondary School (KSS) – both in Kono district – were involved in a serious brawl late March that left about 11 students injured.

The injured students were taken to the government hospital in Kono where they were treated for their wounds.

Ms. Kamara says her boss gave the mandate to suspend schooling activities because of last week’s clash between the two schools.

However, law enforcement personnel in the township have so far quelled the volatile situation as some are being deployed to campuses of the feuding schools.

Police investigations into the cause of the brawl are ongoing, while the 31 students arrested have been released.
