Sierra Leone and Columbus Crew striker, Kei Kamara, finished a distant second behind Italian Sebastian Giovinco for the US Major League Soccer (MLS) Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

The Italian was named the MLS MVP player on Wednesday morning after he received the most votes ahead of Kamara and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber in a poll of players, league officials and media members.

The 28-year-old forward was also named as the MLS Newcomer of the Year and is in the season’s Best XI squad, secured a total of 258.97 from 87.27 percent of club votes, 94.37 percent of media votes and 77.33 percent of players votes.

Kei Kamara on the other had 1.85 percent of club votes, 4.23 percent of media votes and 6.98 of players vote to pull at total of 13.06 votes.

This was the second award the Italian has pipped the Sierra Leonean to this season after he also scooped the league’s Golden Boot award with 22 goals and a league-high of 16 assists, breaking the league record for combined goals and assists. Despite levelling on goals with Kamara, Giovinco secured the award because of his high assist to Kamara’s six.

Although Kamara’s big season has so far proved unlucky, the former Norwich City striker could grab a consolation by winning the MLS Cup this weekend.

He had s earlier admitted that team honours are more important than individual award.
