The National Youth Commission (NAYCOM), in partnership with GIZ, has commenced a weeklong training for youths and youth workers at the District Youth Council Hall in Koidu, Kono District.

The workshop on ‘Leadership and Management’ mainly targets youths from Kenema, Koinadugu and Kono districts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Coordinator of National Youth Council, Mohamed B. Koroma, said young people are looking forward to such opportunities to build their capacity and help them contribute positively to the development of the country.

He said that through many interventions by Ministry of Youth Affairs, the National Youth Commission and their partners, young people, have benefitted from many empowerment programmes.

NAYCOM’s board representative for the eastern province, Rev. Sahr Christian Fayia, stated that young people should regard see themselves as engines of change and grab every opportunity given to them.

He said young people should avoid being used as perpetrators of violence, but as co-partner in development.

Employment Promotion Pogrammes Coordinator at GIZ, Joost Gwinner, maintained that the training was designed for youth empowerment and to strengthen their skills and capability.

He said GIZ had been engaged in various programmes for young people, but also saw a need for leadership and management training skills.

The weeklong training will focus on leadership skills and competencies, business skills and programme planning, among others.

At the end of the training, participants are expected to be empowered to face challenges in their daily work, as well as improve networking among young people.
