Desmond Spain talking to the school girls about the projects
Implementing their one million five hundred thousand United States Dollars material assistance to the government’s Free Quality Education, one of the leading GSM providers in Sierra Leone, Orange Telecom has started distributing menstrual hygiene packs to school girls across the country.
On 20th of August 2018, the Government of Sierra Leone under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio launched the free quality education as its flagship project for the benefit of all kids in Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the distribution of the menstrual hygiene packs to the Tombo, Russel Technical and the Peninsular Secondary Schools in Waterloo, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, Desmond Spain, said the assistance project has five components including distribution of menstrual hygiene packs to school girls across the country.
He further stated that the assistance will also provide ‘Super Coder Academy’ a project that will provide introductory ICT training on basic coding for 100 Senior Secondary Schools.
He said the project will give students an opportunity to learn gaming codes and creating game applications and tell their story.
He said they will also be providing online training courses for teachers across the country that will enable them to stay in class and be learning as well.
He disclosed that they will also be providing solar panels electricity to rural schools across the country.
He said they would be organizing debate and quiz competition for secondary schools across the country, and that such will help improve the learning capacity of pupils.
He said the projects were another milestone for Orange Sierra Leone as they continue with their progress to be the best in class operator and to also be a major contributor to the well-being of Sierra Leoneans.
He noted that they don’t only make profit in the country but they also give back to society.
He said before now, it was forbidding for people to discuss menstrual issue publicly, but that the narratives have changed, noting that it was one of the reasons teenage pregnancy was on the increase in the country.
He encouraged the girls to open up to their parents and teachers about their menstrual and advised them to focus on their studies and not allow to be victims of teenage pregnancy.
