Residents of the Rokel Community in the western area rural district have vowed to provide the necessary support to the fight against corruption by giving out credible information to aid the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in its work.
During a sensitisation organised by the ACC’s Outreach Unit over the weekend, they agreed that corruption was responsible for the current state of affairs in the country and that people were not getting basic services because of the menace.
Speaker after speaker commended the ACC for the gains made so far and vowed to support them with renewed zeal to ensure that corruption is reduced, if not eradicated.
Headwoman of the Community, Juliana Williams, commended the ACC for the engagement and urged them to do more of it so that her subordinates will understand why they needed to join the fight.
She said corruption was destroying the country and it should take a collective effort from all and sundry to ensure it was reduced.
Because councilors and those heading communities are not getting salaries, Madam Williams appealed to the commission to advocate on their behalf so that they can receive support from government.
According to her, the payment of salary and support will help minimise the possibility of them engaging in corruption related activities.
“I am happy that the ACC decided to sensitize my community about their work and the dangers of corruption. We will support you to weed our country of corruption,” she assured.
Head of Outreach Unit, Abubakarr Turay, spoke about the many achievements of the ACC, especially in the last eight months and what they have done on the preventive part of the fight.
He said they have succeeded in recouping over seven billion Leones from corrupt officials and handed it over to the government, as well as securing one hundred percent conviction rate of their cases in court.
He urged the community people to join them in the fight as corruption affect everyone, irrespective of tribe, region or political affiliation.
