Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Prince Macmillan has disclosed that the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Agency (SILEA) would start operations this October as a diploma awarding institution.
ASP Macmillan made this statement last Thursday during a press briefing at police headquarters in Freetown.
He said application forms can be purchased by depositing the sum of for Le250,000 at the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank (SLCB).
“For now we will start offering a diploma in security and safety which will be a 12 months duration, 8 weeks internship, among others. The requirement for this programme is three (3) credits including English,” he said.
He further said that the course would not only police officers but also for members of public including security institutions, as part of strengthening the security sector in the country.
“I can assure you we are capable of delivering this course. It is a specialty; we are going to continue to degree and post graduate level,” ASP Macmillan said, adding that the academy is affiliated to the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom, the University of Sierra Leone and other bodies.
He urged people to take advantage of the offer, adding that security and safety are key issues discussed in the realm of globalisation.
Also, AIG Kalia Sesay said the diploma course would commence at the Police Training School at Hastings as construction of the academy is still in progress at Makomp.
AIG Sesay said the police and their international partners have been able to train their officers who now are taking part in missions in Somalia and Sudan, thus stating that they’re making huge mark.
‘’Graduates in the course can be employed as UN Volunteers, Metropolitan Police, private security companies among others will benefit from offering this course,’’ he said.
