To promote  good education and empower school children, the Freetown Rotary Club, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Thunder Bay Fort Williams in Canada, has donated school furniture worth over Le35 million to the Rural Education Committee Primary School at Regent in the Western Rural District of Sierra Leone.

Speaking at the donation ceremony held at the school, erstwhile president of Freetown Rotary Club, Christian Martyn Kamara, who is also National General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) in Sierra Leone, said they had established friendship with the school and that the donation of desks and chairs was the second phase of their support to the school.

He revealed that the donation was made possible with help from Rotary Club of Thunder Bay Fort Williams in Canada, adding that they had renovated the school by fixing doors, windows and paved the flow of the school.

He said they are now part of the school and that their doors will be open to the school’s authorities as he promised they would do all in their might to make sure quality education is provided to pupils because they believe “educating children is empowering the nation”.

Also, vice president of Freetown Rotary Club, Dr. Brima James, said as their motto implies – ‘Service Above Self’ – they identify problems in their respective communities and come in to give a helping hand, which was what they did for the Rural Education Committee Primary School at Regent.

He said the Rotary Club believes in development and that they are ready to always render support to communities.

While receiving the items, John A. Bangura, Deputy Headmaster of the school, thanked the Freetown Rotary Club and expressed their appreciation for the donation.

He said they were having constraints in the school but their friendship with the Rotary Club has made things better, and appealed to Rotarians to continue to support the school.

He disclosed that the school has more than 400 pupils and appealed for assistance for new classrooms to accommodate pupils in a conducive learning environment.
