Victims at the Malama clinic
Over the last two decades, Sierra Leone has been troubled with various types of outbreaks and disaster including the civil war, Ebola and the mudslide and flash floods being the most recent.
As a result of those disasters, thousands of Sierra Leoneans have lost their lives; the economics of the state dwindled drastically, leaving many other people purely destitute.
The status of many Sierra Leoneans as a result of those disasters is pathetic, as over 60 percent of the country population is living below $2USD a day and many other Sierra Leoneans don’t even have a comfortable and safe haven.
As a way of providing support to those set of people who have gone through a traumatic period, the Jylama Organization recently fed and clothed over 150 mudslide affected victims at the Faith Malama Clinic Hospital.
According to the Manager of Jylama Organization, Pateh Konteh their organization was formed mainly to help the poor and the needy in society. She said as a way to give back to their country is the main reason why they decided to embark on such a task.
“This is just the start, as long as we have the opportunity; we will continue to provide support, to the poor and the needy. It is not a political motivated move; we are doing this because we think we owe it to society.” Konteh said.
The manager said it took them a little while to respond to such disasters, noting that they were putting the necessary packages together. She called on the victims to remain patience, adding that they tend to provide more aid.
Executive Director of Centre for Youth Solution, Francis Kandeh thanked Jylama Organization for their support to the victims. He called on other organizations to come onboard and support the victims. According to the Director, there are numerous children who have lost both parent through the August 14 disaster. He noted that “these children are vulnerable and they need support, not just in the area of food and clothing but empowerment support for the future.”
One of the beneficiaries Mohamed Mansaray said “we are undergoing a lot of suffering and the money which government gave to us to resettle is not enough.”
He maintained that most of their children are not going to school as a result of that disaster. He thanked the Jylama Organization for their unflinching support and appealed for more.
