Exams Malpractice: WAEC Examiners in Court

Two examiners of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) who were marking General Mathematics scripts of candidates of the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) will on Monday, 6 November make their second appearance before Hon. Justice Gooding at the High Court in Freetown.

The examiners, Mohamed P. Konneh and Sahr Mani, were teachers at the Ansarul Islamic Secondary School in Kenema and the Government Technical Secondary School in Freetown respectively.

They have been charged with five counts of conspiracy, abuse of office, soliciting an advantage and accepting an advantage.

In the offence of conspiracy, both accused persons are alleged to have, on diverse dates from 12 April to 15 June 2017, conspired with other persons unknown to improperly confer an advantage on one Amie Fayia.

The two accused persons, under counts 2 and 3, were charge with the offence of abuse of office in which they improperly conferred an advantage on Amie Fayia -a WASSCE candidate with index number 6010612066 by allowing her to re-sit her General Mathematics Paper 2.

The first accused was also charged with soliciting an advantage in count 4 and as prosecutors allege that he had received the sum of Le.250,000 purportedly as payment for Amie Fayia to re-sit the General Mathematics Paper 2, whilst second accused Sahr Mani, in count 5, is alleged to have accepted an advantage by receiving the sum of Le250,000 as payment.

Both accused persons pleaded not guilty and were released on bail.
