Sierra Leonean expatriates in Liberia have on Saturday 30th September, donated over twenty million Leones to pupils affected by the August 14 mudslides and flood disaster.
The donation was done at Old Skool camp, western Freetown.
Presenting the cash donation, representative of the Sierra Leonean expatriates living and working in Liberia for the United Nations, International Non -Governmental organisations, Dr. Francis Kai Kai, said they were in the country to support pupils from Primary, Junior to Senior Secondary School levels.
“When we came here, they told us that they have 166 children in the camp attending school. 36 of them are in JSS while 130 are in primary school,”Dr.Kai Kai said.
He said they were providing two hundred thousand Leones to each secondary school pupil and one hundred thousand Leones to each primary school pupils, to help them purchase school materials.
“We are Sierra Leoneans. We believe anything happening with Sierra Leone will affect us. We have all our investments here and whatever we earn in Liberia come back to Sierra Leone,” he said.
He said they as expatriates have always been doing great even during the Ebola outbreak.
“There is always need to associate with our country. We are Sierra Leoneans and we feel it when Sierra Leone goes through this kind of trauma.”
Bambeh Jalloh, one of the beneficiaries attending Mission Church of Africa Secondary School, expressed thanks and appreciation to Doctor Kai-Kai and his fellow Sierra Leoneans in Liberia and expressed hope for more help, adding that the money has reduced the burden on their parents to purchase learning materials.
