Vice President Victor Bockarie Foah has said government is seriously concerned about the welfare of children who were directly affected by  the August 14 ,2017, mudslide and flooding, stating that they are putting mechanisms in place to cater for them as schools are about to be re-reopened.

He made the above statement on Wednesday while receiving school materials worth millions of Leones from a Sierra Leonean based in the United Kingdom, Sheik Abes Kamara, who also doubles as the Deputy Chairman of the All Peoples Congress (APC) in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Vice President Foh said during the expanded cabinet discussion on Tuesday, they extensively discussed issues around children especially those affected by the flood and mudslide disaster and how they could start attending schools.

“This was a serious disaster that besieged the country. The mountain rolled down the valley following a heavy downpour. A lot of people died and this is the time humanitarian organisations and individuals should come and help in this fight,” he said.

“Sierra Leone has been classified as one of the disaster prone countries. That is why we want to remove people from disaster prone areas. Government has acquired some plot of land at mile 36 where we intend to build permanent structures. I want to thank you very much for considering those children. Schools will reopen very soon and your support is timely. If this is what every Sierra Leonean can do, this nation will develop.”

He thanked Donbosco Fambul for their continuous support to the government and people of Sierra Leone.

According to the donor, Kamara, that was not the first time he has provided support to Sierra Leoneans and that as a lawyer, he wanted to have the best of education for Sierra Leonean children.

“I brought in items worth 15 million Leones. These include pens, pencils, and books among other things. This is my little support I can offer to these vulnerable children,” he said.
