Magistrate Santigie Bangura presiding at the Pademba Road Magistrates’ Court No.5 yesterday (5th July 2017) remanded one Chernor Conteh at the Male Correctional Centre for allegedly defrauding one Justicia Alie the sum of Le37.5 million by falsely pretending that he would secure her a Chinese scholarship.

Chernor Conteh, 32, was arraigned on three counts of obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 32 (1) of Larceny Act 1916.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Foday Tarawally, alleged that sometimes in September 2015, the accused fraudulently took monies from the complainant at different locations including; 2f Morgan Lane Brookfields, Radission Blue Hotel at Aberdeen, and Siaka Steven Street in Freetown.

The prosecution claimed that the accused with intent to defraud the complaint, obtained the total sum of US$5,000 from him by falsely pretending that he will secure her a Chinese scholarship to pursue a Masters Degree in the People’s Republic of China, knowing same to be false.

Meanwhile, lawyer Tarawally applied for bail on behalf of his client, but the magistrate refused it on the grounds that the money involved was huge and that he hasn’t heard evidence in the matter.

The matter has been adjourned to the 12th July, 2017 for the prosecution to open its case.

In another development in the same courtroom, Magistrate Bangura also sent the case of Theopheius Ibrahim Kanu to the High Court for further trail after the prosecution summoned two witnesses.

The prosecution alleged that Kanu bit the left hand of one Jessica Mansaray during a scuffle between the two.

Before committing his case, Magistrate Bangura said the accused has questions to answer with regards the allegations that were brought against him.
