Sierra Leone team celebrates their success

Sierra Leone junior wrestlers, Fatmata Mansaray, and Mathew Moiwoi Farmah both scooped silver and bronze medal at the just concluded 2017 African Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Fatmata Mansaray battled in the 72 kg Women’s wrestling junior category against Nour JeljelI of Tunisia and after a closed tie 2-2 0-5, the Tunisian went on to snatch the gold medal, while Mansaray settled for the silver.

In the male category, Mathew Moiwoi Farmah aka “Player Man” was able to walk away with bronze medal in the 66 kg Greco-Roman Juniors battle with Tunisian Souleymen Nasr, securing gold and Ayoub Hanine Morrocco finished second to settle for the silver medal.

President of Sierra Leone Wrestling Association, Prince Vandy Sualley though not satisfied, was a bit pleased with the success achieved by the junior wrestlers.

He said: “I was expecting our senior wrestlers to come with gold this time but it was the junior fighters who did great and we appreciate that.”

Meanwhile, Egypt bagged three gold medals in freestyle on the final day of the Championships on Sunday. Abdelmottaleb, who was placed ninth at the Olympic Games in Rio, outscored his opposition 19-1 in two matches at 125kg. Egypt’s other gold medals were won by Samy Moustafa (74kg) and Mahmoud Badawi (86kg).
