One Mbalu Kamara was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison by Justice Alusine Sesay of the Freetown High Court after she pleaded guilty of killing her husband at Hill Top, Hill Station in Freetown in December 2013.

Earlier, in his plea of mitigation on behalf of his client, defence counsel Ishmael P. Mammy told the judge the middle-aged woman is a mother of two children who are both below the ages of five. He submitted that a long sentence would cause more suffering to the children who are already without a father.

He thus pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy, though acknowledging that the offence is a very serious one, but underscored that his client has been on remand since 2013.

Delivering the sentence, Judge Sesay warned the convict to control her temper in future, noting that her fit of jealousy has rendered the children fatherless and left them permanently in tears.

“The husband has gone and will never come back and according to you, there is no relative to take care of the children left by the deceased. If I jailed you for long term the children will live to suffer. I will temper justice for the sake of the children. I will sentence you to two years effective form the date you were incarcerated (30 December, 2013).

According to State Counsel, Nigel Brian Eugene Davies Esq., the convict murdered her husband – Sheriff Kamara – on 23 December, 2013 at Hill Top, Hill Station in Freetown.
