Magistrate Dr. Binneh-Kamara of the Freetown Magistrates’ court No 1 yesterday granted Le40 million bail to one Gladys Vandy, former Cashier at Mercury International, plus two sureties in like sum and committed the matter to the High court for trial.
He ordered that both sureties must be residents in the Western Area and must produce National Identification Cards, adding that the bail must be approved by the Deputy Acting Master and Registrar.
“I have gone through the evidence and I am satisfied that the accused does have a case to answer pursuant to the offence as charged. I therefore commit the matter to the high court for trial,” he ordered.
The accused was before Magistrate Dr. Abou Bhakarr Binneh-Kamara for allegedly stealing the sum of twenty-five million Leone from the Company and was in court to answer to a count’s charge of larceny by servant, contrary to law.
According to the particulars of offence, the accused on diverse dates between September and October, 2016 at Mercury International office, No.27 Krootown Road, west end of the city, being a cashier employed by the company ,stole the sum of Le25, 639,000,00.
In his testimony, Investigating Officer, Police Constable 3736, Mohamed Umar Komara attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, Central Police Station, told the court that on 13th November, 2016 whiles on duty, a case of larceny was reported at the station against the accused.
He said he and Detective Sergeant, 2088 Mansaray D.M interviewed the accused and obtained statement from her and charged her with the offence of larceny by servant on 16 November 2016.
However, Dr. Binneh-Kamara stated that the prosecution had proven that the accused has a case to answer after calling two witnesses who testified in the matter.
