Sierra Leone men’s and women’s Kabaddi team started their campaign in the circle style Kabaddi World Cup with defeat at Ludhiana on Sunday.

The West African nation was up against the Indians, who are five-time winners of the tournament. Even though they went into the clash as underdogs, the Sierra Leone team pushed the host nation very hard before they emerged victorious with a 46-38 score line.

India raiders, Sultan, Jashanpreet Singh Raju and Manjot Singh Gill scored 9 points each to help them grab the all-important win in their opening Pool ‘A’ clash.

In the Women’s category, United States of America also registered a win, defeating their Sierra Leonean opponent in Amritsar by nine points.

Other results in the tournament saw England’s men showed that they would be strong contenders for the title. The English maintained a comfortable lead right from the start of the match, as they defeated Sweden 57-23. In another match, Canada defeated Sri Lanka 60-27, while the Iranian men defeated Tanzania 62-23.
