Team Sierra Leone finished second behind host China at the Nanjing International Youth Sport and Culture Week organised in China.
The Sierra Leone team, which had a beach volleyball squad, a swimmer and weightlifter, finished in second position in the overall ranking while Guinea and Liberia finished third and fourth respectively.
In beach volleyball, the Sierra Leone female pair of Bernardette Fofanah and Isatu Chernor Bah engaged their Chinese opponent in a match that ended in 1-2, 2-1 with both sides winning a set each. The country’s male swimmer Ishmael Koroma swum 29.48 sec in the 50 Freestyle as he finished fourth behind China, Guinea, and Liberia, while in the weightlifting category Abu Bakarr Kamara finished first in snatch lifting 75kg and second in the clean and jerk lifting 110kg.
Four countries – Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and hosts China – took part in the festival in recognition of the Nanjing International Youth Sport and Culture Week, and Sierra Leone like Liberia and Guinea were invited because the countries were prevented to compete at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games due of the Ebola scourge that affected the Nations during the Games period.
Unfortunately Nigeria could not make the trip for unknown reasons.
