Sierra Leone center-back, Gibril ‘Barrel’ Sankoh, on Monday July 6 signed a one-year deal with Dutch Eredivisie side, Roda JC.

The 32-year-old defender signed for one season with the Holland side as a free player after his contract with Chinese club Henan Jianye was earlier terminated by mutual consent.

Sankoh, who holds a Dutch passport, had been training with his former club FC Groningen since his departure from China, and was hoping to enforce a contract with the club but a deal could not be struck due to financial disagreement.

The former FC Groningen player who had 179 games under his belt for the team will have the chance to help the newly promoted Roda JC stay in the Dutch topflight league.

The club’s Managing Director, Wim Collard, hoped the defender could fit in the team’s style of play.

He said: “We were looking for a defender with experience and we are glad we’ve got Gibril, who can add to the selection. He knows the Dutch Eredivisie and we are confident that he will fit in the style of play at Roda JC.”

This move has ended Sankoh’s five years spell outside Dutch football since he departed FC Groningen for FC Augsburg in Germany. He later moved on to China.
