Sierra Leone Rio 2016 Olympic Games hopeful, Hafsatu Kamara, has qualified for the upcoming African Athletics Championships which is slated for Durban, South Africa, from June 22 to 26.
The sprinter booked her qualification spot after clocking 11.61 seconds with a legal wind reading of 0.8 m/s at the Altis summer series in Phoenix Arizona, United States of America.
Kamara’s success also saw her set a new national record in the 100 meters which was recently set by Ngozi Musa of Harvard University. Musa’s record was 11.66 seconds, set only two months ago at Northridge, was erased by Kamara.
The sprinter’s performance gives hope for a Sierra Leone Women’s 4×100 metres team to be medal contenders at the African Athletics Championships in South Africa and also make the cut to Rio for the last remaining 8 spots left in the relay event.
Kamara and teammates Ngozi Musa and Maggie Barrie are all mid 11 seconds range performers at this stage and are hopeful to improve as the summer wears on.
