The Judiciary of Sierra Leone will today commence a two day conference to reflect on current issues and reform initiatives, with a view to contributing to a new vision for the future of that arm of government.
Head of Information and Communications Technology Unit, Alpha Bannie Jalloh, said the conference will be held at the Bintumani Hotel in Aberdeen, Freetown, on the theme ‘Instituting Reform-Improving Services to the Public’, adding that some 150 participants will be in attendance, including Judges, Judicial Officers, key staff from the Ministry of Justice, Private Legal Practitioners and Civil Society Partners. The keynote speaker will be President Ernest Bai Koroma, he said.
He revealed that the conference objectives are to reflect on current issues and reform initiatives, with an overarching aim of contributing to a vision for the future of judicial services in Sierra Leone.
Jalloh said input generated from participants at the conference would feed into judicial reform plans and strategies, adding that it would provide an opportunity to share updates on initiatives undertaken by the Judiciary to date, and to shape and determine the reform roadmap.
Meanwhile, the holding of the conference means that no court sessions will be during the two days, except for matters deemed urgent, added Mr. Jalloh.
Just few weeks ago, the Judiciary organised a two-day training for Magistrates on sentencing guidelines, with observers attributing the latest moves to a rejuvenated judiciary under new Chief Justice Hon. Abdulai Cham.
